The Iron Lady Movie Review

The Iron Lady is the story of Margaret Thatcher,

a staunch conservative who enters political life to defend

and preserve her belief in how government should be

governed. Faced with an all-male, dominated parliament,

she eventually runs for office as the leader of the party,

and Prime Minister. Serving as England's head of government,

for more than a decade, she becomes one of the most powerful

and influential political figures of the 20th Century.

The film is best when Thatcher is shown flexing her

political muscle. A force not to be dissuaded in her convictions,

she, indeed, becomes The Iron Lady.

The film touches "sketchily" on Thatcher's relationship

with her husband and children. Although somewhat incidental to

the telling of this story, the audience might have wished for a

more intimate insight into Thatcher's personal relationship with

her family.

Another aspect of this film, which I found rather tedious

and weakened the film, was the inordinate amount of time spent on

Thatcher's decline in mental health after she had left office and

aged considerably. Perhaps if the script writers had sharpened their

pens, they could have place more emphasis on Thatcher's political

achievements and failures- Thus, making for a more intense, interesting

story of a woman when she was vibrant force headed for the history

books.

Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher is nothing short of

perfection. She captures both the essence of Thatcher, the politician,

and the strengths and weaknesses akin to all humanity.

Streep looks remarkably like Margaret Thatcher. (Thanks to

her make-up artist). Even Streep's voice and body language are

remarkable. A testimony to her great talent.

How many accolades can one shower upon the talented Meryl

Streep ? Well it seems the number is limitless, and well deserving.
